The remarkable story of Robert Stroud, a psychopathic murderer who spent 54 years in jail at Leavenworth Prison and Alcatraz, was never permitted to see the 1962 film, Birdman of Alcatraz starring Burt Lancaster.
Stroud's experience of raising an estimated 300 canaries in his cells led to the writing of two books: Diseases of Canaries (1933) and Stroud's Digest On The Diseases Of Birds (1943).
