Ever wondered?
The human body renews itself. The skin is constantly being replaced but tattoos remain.
How come?
The part of the skin that is constantly dying is the epidermis. This layer is replaced. Tattoos however, are in the fibroelastic layer below the epidermis called the dermis. White blood cells, macrophages, are sent to the damaged area by the immune system. Here they repair by eating up the foreign material and skin cells called fibroblasts soak up the dye.
The microphages and fibroblasts are responsible for the longevity of tattoos, although the tattoo may fade over time.
